Last year, I made a personal pact to form a new habit and shop with black owned businesses; Black owned women’s businesses, to be more specific.
I understand firsthand the impact and psychology around marketing and advertising. And many small businesses can’t compete with the millions of dollars these bigger companies pay to advertise to us, daily and consistently. More often than not, smaller companies get filtered out by stores with huge budgets, such as Fashion Nova, Pretty Little Things, and ASOS.
To make matters worse, some of the companies listed above, are NOTORIOUS for ripping off designs from these smaller black owned companies.
So I’ve made it a point to make these smaller stores present on my timeline and reprogram my thinking to see beyond the “suggested ads”.
As a small business owner, I understand that it takes a little research and digging to unearth these stylish gems of stores. One way to find BOB’s, is visiting the Fashion Bomb Daily — they’re awesome at highlighting black owned businesses and brands.
Rare Finds from Black Owned Businesses
Let’s be clear that I hate the notion of “let’s support black owned businesses”. When I’m shopping at Target or Topshop, I’m not thinking, “man I’m so happy to be supporting them”. I’m shopping with them because they provide a valuable service that meets my needs.
I don’t have anything against any other race or ethnicity. In fact, I still purchase from larger brand name stores and in particular, indie stores of all backgrounds. I just made it a priority to include BOBs into my rotation as well. Below are a few looks from some of my fav BOB’s with their pages linked below:
